Final Expense Insurance
Final expense life insurance is a type of whole life insurance policy geared towards the 65 and older market, with smaller face amounts, (typically $5,000 to $25,000.) It’s typically less expensive and made to help loved ones prepare for the costs that come in the final stage of life. Surprisingly, final expenses can quickly add up to thousands of dollars. With today's funeral costs averaging $11,000, having a final expense insurance plan can ease the financial burden and allow your family to focus on healing.

Most final expense insurance policies are whole life policies, which means they do not expire as long as premiums are paid, and they may build cash value over time. Premiums usually remain fixed for the life of the policy, ensuring that the cost does not increase over time. These policies often have simplified underwriting processes, meaning that applicants may not need to undergo a medical exam. Instead, they may only need to answer a few health-related questions. The policy's death benefit is typically paid out quickly to the beneficiary upon the insured's death, helping to cover immediate expenses.

Types of Final Expense Insurance Policies

Not every final expense life insurance policy is the same. Depending on your health and how much you are able to afford in premiums, there is a policy option that is right for you. Here are some of the different death benefit types associated with a final expense policy.

An immediate or standard final expense insurance policy allows for beneficiaries to receive full death benefits no matter when or how the policyholder died after the start of the insurance policy. This means the insurance company will pay the full death benefit if the insured passes away due to natural causes or an accident, starting from day one. This is the best of the three options, as it offers lower rates and no restrictions on the death benefit.
Under a graded benefit plan, beneficiaries may receive benefits from the insurance policy at a limited amount depending upon how soon the insured individual passed away after the start of the policy.
For example, a graded benefit policy may have it so that if the insured passes during the first year of the policy, up to 40 percent of the benefit will be given to the beneficiaries. If the insured dies within the second year, up to 80 percent of the benefits will go to the beneficiaries.
The total benefits will go to the beneficiaries if the policy holder passes after the first two years of the policy. These percentages may differ between insurance companies and their specific policies, but the beneficiaries can expect to receive a portion of the benefits depending on when the individual passes after the insurance policy initially goes into effect.
Guaranteed issue policies are not subject to the same underwriting requirements that other insurance policies are. Applicants don’t have to answer any health questions or take medical exams to assess their risk. This may make a guaranteed issue policy ideal for someone who has medical issues that make passing traditional underwriting requirements difficult. Insurers offering guaranteed issue (guaranteed acceptance) policies generally have a two- or three-year waiting period for death from natural causes. If the insured passes away within this period, the beneficiary typically receives the total premiums paid, plus an additional 10%. Once the waiting period has passed, the beneficiary is eligible for the full death benefit. However, death due to accidental causes is not subject to the waiting period and is paid in full from the start of coverage.
